Manus, gorillas and staples abound as bomb competition comes with big goal


Saturday’s competition used the college’s pool, which community groups have big plans for.
Palmerston North is suffering from a lack of swimming lane space, with swimming clubs sharing the city’s pools with water sports, aqua fitness classes and learn-to-swim classes.
Pools are booked solid outside school hours, but the college’s pool is barely used outside term one.
Manawatū’s Almighty Outcasts Swim Squad coach Lin Tozer​ is working with the college’s principal Chris Moller to try to create a community pool for the city.
The long-term plan was to get the pool heated and covered, which would cost $1 million, if there was enough demand. ....

“I’m not trying to bring a problem to the council. In fact, it’s an opportunity for the city to get ahead in providing a facility.
“The Palmerston North facilities are fantastic, but they do not meet requirements for a lot of the users.”
Jessen, who has been a swimmer all his life, said the 25 metre indoor pool at the Lido wasn’t deep enough for water polo, had no seating so couldn’t hold major events, and was the only pool available during winter when the outdoor pool closes. ....

At the moment swimming clubs share the city s pools with other water sports, learn-to-swim programmes and aqua fitness classes, and pools are booked solid outside school hours.
Moller believes the school’s six-lane 33.3-metre outdoor pool and a separate diving pool, which are barely used outside term one, could be developed through a joint funding model with the community.
Tozer said they wanted to run the pool under a community model, using it to teach people to swim. She hoped for input from children in the school and community.
The long-term plan was to get the pool covered and heated, which she estimated would cost $1 million, but first she needed to know if there was demand for it. ....
