DPP picks former legislator for Taichung by-election

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday tapped former legislator Lin Ching-yi (林靜儀) to represent the party in the by-election for Taichung’s second electoral district.
“Looking at all the qualifications, Lin is the best choice to run in this race,” President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), who doubles as DPP chairperson, told a news conference at the party’s headquarters in Taipei.
Lin served one term as a legislator-at-large from 2016 to last year. She is a doctor of gynecology and obstetrics at the Chung Shan Medical University Hospital in Taichung.
Tsai pointed to Lin’s current role as the party’s “ambassador-at-large,” working on Taiwan’s international initiatives.

Majority backs combining Hsinchu city and county

More than 60 percent of Taiwanese are in favor of combining the administrations of Hsinchu County and Hsinchu City to form a special municipality, a survey commissioned by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) showed.
Hsinchu Mayor Lin Chih-chien (林智堅) proposed the idea last month, after which the DPP commissioned a survey to gauge public opinion on the matter, the party said on Sunday.
The survey, which was conducted on Sept. 13, 22 and Monday last week, found that 61.3 percent of respondents were in favor of the proposal, while 30.1 percent were against it.

President to order DPP to campaign for ‘no’ on Aug. 28

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) is today to order the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to campaign against four referendums to be held on Aug. 28, DPP spokeswoman Yen Juo-fang (顏若芳) said yesterday.
The four referendums are initiatives to restart construction at the mothballed Fourth Nuclear Power Plant; ban pork imports that contain ractopamine; relocate a planned liquefied natural gas terminal; and hold referendums and elections concurrently.
Reiterating a Facebook post made by Tsai earlier in the day, Yan said that the position of the president, who is also party chairperson, is: “Four nays make Taiwan stronger.” ....
