Because, you know, even if you, medicare might have about a half a trillion dollars worth of available ways to cut it. the president has already signed those up for another purpose. to help finance his healthcare reform program and create within it a new entitlement. that is where the big problem. it s possible they might go somewhere on social security. republicans won t make the first move on that, i don t think. but on medicare, i don t see anything happening on that and it s extremely worrisome. bret: on that, today, the chief medicare actuary testified on capitol hill. was asked two things. will the healthcare law bring down costs? his answer, i would say false. more so than true. two, will everyone get to keep their current healthcare plan as promised? not true in all cases. i mean, you have that, and the c.b.o. release today. ....

Priorities. he was well past the halfway point of the speech before mentioning it. what did he offer? having more than doubled the federal deficit in with the years, mr. obama proposed to freeze spending at the current bloated level. the freeze would apply to only a fraction of the budget. for the biggest drivers of spending and debt, social security, medicare and medicaid, mr. obama said almost nothing about curbing their growth. he called for fixing social security without cutting benefit, not only for current retirees, but for future retirees as well. that would be quite a trick. republicans elected to cut spending will push for far deeper cut in mr. obama s proposed partial freeze, but having been burned politically time and again when they try to rein in growth of medicare and spending they are unable to make the first move. based on last night, president is unwilling to lead on the issue either. ....
