The shadow cast by the clouds is naturally the space of the building. Inspired by Kaareklint s 1933 design for the structure of the outdoor chairs in Safari, the architects allowed the building s supporting structure to adjust to the ups and downs of the terrain. The length of each side is neither fixed nor consistent and varies according to site conditions. It looks like a huge tent lying on the grass. This structure also responds to the client s functional orientation of the building. The site is surrounded by a combination of flat grassland, natural water, and woodland, making it a great place for camping in its natural state. In the last fifteen years, Yunnan has gone from being a best-kept secret to a must-visit travel destination. The old towns of Lijiang, Dali and Shangri-La have changed from rustic backwaters into highly commercialized versions of their former selves.
In wake of these tourism-driven changes, the search for new towns that preserve the cultural and architectural traditions of Yunnan s ethnic minorities is well under way, with Yunnan s second tier destinations such as Shaxi, Tengchong and Lugu Lake all receiving more domestic and foreign travelers.
The small town of Xizhou (喜州) is another example of an increasingly popular off-the-beaten-path stop for visitors to Yunnan. About 30 kilometers north of Dali, Xizhou has developed a reputation for its protected sites highlighting Bai architecture. ....

Off the beaten trek: Tiger Leaping Gorge part 1- Bamboo forest path

Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡). Three simple words, one awesome attraction.
Inaccessible peaks poke the sky, soaring three-thousand meters above the foaming river deep down within. Trekkers converge from around the globe to experience the scenic wonder. Many walk through in one or two days. That is a splendid way to experience the gorge, with the added benefit of hot showers and convenient dining at guesthouses along the way.
Yet some reach journey s end yearning for more. For them, I present several challenging hikes that reach beyond the standard, well-beaten footpath.
Below, in the first article of a series, I explain how to traverse the Bamboo Forest Path (竹林小路) through a scenic canyon with waterfalls. In future articles, I ll take you to Haba Village (哈巴村) at the base of Haba Snow Mountain (哈巴雪山), and then back to Tiger Leaping Gorge by a different route.
