Lack of Covid help puts medical research at risk, UK charities warn

Last modified on Mon 5 Apr 2021 00.08 EDT Medical charities have expressed dismay at the UK government’s failure to act over hundreds of millions of pounds of research that is at risk because of the catastrophic impact of Covid on fundraising. With charity shops closed and fundraising events cancelled, medical charities have been forced to cut more than 40% of their research spending in the past year, and have told institutions that more cuts will follow. In an 11th hour deal last week, the government announced £250m to help pay for the UK’s association with Horizon Europe, an international, seven-year research programme. But leading scientific institutions still face cuts of more than 20% because of the collapse in medical charity funding.

New study to measure how sedentary behavior can impact health

New study to measure how sedentary behavior can impact health A new worldwide study funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) will measure how certain physical behaviors, such as sitting for long periods of time, can impact health. The £855,000 research project at the University College London (UCL), in collaboration with the University of Sydney, will look at how sedentary behavior can lead to heart and circulatory conditions such as heart attack and stroke, in order to improve prevention. Although physical inactivity is a well-known risk factor for heart and circulatory conditions, its understanding is limited. Most evidence comes from questionnaire-based studies that examine behaviors - such as amount of exercise, sitting, and sleep quality and duration - independently.

Cancer Research UK announces dramatic cuts to its life-saving research budget

Cancer Research UK announces dramatic cuts to its life-saving research budget Cancer Research UK have announced today further dramatic cuts, slashing £45 million from its research budget. This is around half of what is normally expected to be spent at this time, and it means dozens of potential life-saving projects and hundreds of world-class scientists have been left unfunded. This devastating blow is on top of the £44 million cut made to current grants at the start of the pandemic, and the charity not being able to fund any new clinical trials this year. The new cuts have led to 24 fewer research programs, 68 fewer projects and 12 fewer fellowships, and Cancer Research UK says there will be around 328 fewer researchers working on their research.
