CLARK, NJ Lifelong Clark resident Joe DiMeo s one wish was to one day be able to hold a burger or slice of pizza again. As simple as it may sound, DiMeo was unable to live a functional and independent life.
He suffered from third-degree burns over 80 percent of his body from a horrific car crash in 2018 and had to move back in with his parents to help care for all of his basic needs. ....

New Jersey man has first successful face and double hand transplants at NYU Langone Health

Joe DiMeo, of Clark, New Jersey, underwent the 23-hour surgery back on Wednesday, August 12.
DiMeo suffered third-degree burns over 80% of his body from a car accident in July 2018. He had fallen asleep at the wheel while heading home from his job at a lab.
Despite undergoing approximately 20 reconstructive surgeries, DiMeo had extensive injuries, including amputated fingertips, severe facial scarring, and no lips or eyelids, that affected his vision and daily activities, and severely limited his ability to live a functional and independent life.
A team of more than 140 health care professionals, including surgeons, nurses, and other staff, was led by Eduardo D. Rodriguez, MD, DDS, the Helen L. Kimmel Professor of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and chair of the Hansjrg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone. ....

A 22-year-old man from New Jersey who suffered horrific injuries in a car accident has become the world s first person to undergo a successful face and double hand transplant, his medical team announced Wednesday.
Joe DiMeo sustained third-degree burns on over 80 percent of his body when he fell asleep while driving home from a night shift in July 2018, causing his car to flip over and then explode.
Though he was pulled to safety by a passerby, his injuries included amputated fingertips, severe facial scarring, and the loss of his lips and eyelids affecting his vision and ability to lead a normal, independent life. ....
