Medical experts stress need for more vaccinations

Although coronavirus morbidity rates continue to fall and restrictions on people s behaviour are being slowly loosened, Latvian health experts are warning against and premature feeling of victory over the virus and in particular are wary of the spread of the more virulent Delta variant of the disease, reported LTV June 26. 
The Delta variant, first detected in India, currently accounts for 5-6% of cases in Latvia, but it is estimated that the situation will change by the end of the summer.     
Over the next two months time, in fact until the beginning of August, this strain of the virus is expected to account for 70% of all cases found in the European Union and 90% by the end of August or the end of the summer, because it is spreading much faster in society, said Jurijs Perevoščikovs, epidemiologist at the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC). ....

The Balvi and Gulbene Hospital Association has raised the alarm about an expected third wave of Covid-19, along with the spread of the most contagious type of Covid-19 in the area, Latvian Television reported March 3.
Health Minister Daniels Pavļuts confirmed that hospitals are heavily congested in Vidzeme and Latgale regions.
In Balvi hospital, the load of beds for Covid-19 has reached 100%, which means that there are no longer free beds and patients are forced to wait in line or go to other municipalities. However, as the most contagious type of Covid-19 in the hospital spreads like wildfire, board member of the Association of Balvi and Gulbene Hospitals, Alīda Vāne, is convinced that other hospitals can expect a similar scenario. ....

RIGA - The third wave of the Covid-19 outbreak is expected in two to four weeks, which could result in twice as much hospital occupancy at Easter than at Christmas, Liene Cipule, director of the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD), posted on her Twitter account today.
We are taking measures to prepare for such a scenario. It is clear that the third wave of the outbreak is expected in two to four weeks, Cipule said. According to her, the workload of hospitals at Easter could be twice as high when compared to Christmas, if as a result of the spread of the UK Covid-19 variant the same scenario will playout in Latvia as elsewhere in Europe. ....
