It is my honor to welcome members of congress, including members of the congressional black caucus, members of the rosa parks family who have come to washington for this special celebration. Can we give them a hand . [applause] and photographer donna, whose photo of miss parks is prominently displayed in a vital part of the exhibition. And all the leaders and staff of the different cultural institutions across washington including secretary of the smithsonian dr. Lonnie bunch [applause] and the archivist of the united states, mr. David very off. And our library guests and staff, and our viewers online, this is being livestreamed right now. And i have to tell you, we are radiating with joy and pride tonight because it is our pleasure to open this beautiful and compelling new exhibition about one of our countrys most beloved civil rights icons, rosa parks. Welcome to the barnum family. Were delighted to have you on this Beautiful Day in downtown bridgeport, connecticut. This is the barnum museum. It is, in fact, p. T. Barnums last museum. As we all know, he started his museum inn 1842, and this was hs last gift not just to city of bridgeport, but really to the Global Community that we serve. Many of you are very familiar with thewe museum. In 2010 we were hit by a tornado because thats the kind of stuff that happens to barnum. And then the year after that it was hurricane irene, and then the year after that it was superstorm sandy. September 7 is the day on which boston, georgetown, and watertown were named and we always commemorate date. We have a series of events each year. This years theme is that medicine and mortality. Im here to tell you it is the most successful charter day we have ever had. Tell me if you have been to other events this year . Would you raise your hand . That is what i thought. This is a wonderful. Excellent. In addition to our fall activities, we have lectures, Reading Group discussions, and tours from april through november. Orleans guest new orleans . What makes it special . Host what makes it, well, unique was the word i was going to use and a little bit different. Its one of the few unique places left. Guest i always say its an ethnicity to come from new orleans. We have our own food, our own music and a real sense of place. It is not, it isnt like any other place in the country. Its much more mediterranean. It, in fact, in capital dames elizabeth playly, whos here in washington, is very much for the union, but as various times, as you know, i have trouble thinking of the south as our enemy. Theyre all our relatives in kentucky and in virginia and tennessee, and she says now new orleans, thats different. Theyre a bunch of french people in quadroons.
