'Little Merman' completes Mactan Island swin – Manila Bulletin

Open-water swimmer Cleevan Kayne Alegres made history Monday when he became the first person to swim around Mactan Island.
The 5’3” swimmer nicknamed “Little Merman” completed the lung-busting 42-kilometer swim in 17 hours, 37 minutes, and 35 seconds.
The 25-year-old Alegres, a native of Barangay Maribago, Lapu-Lapu City, started swimming at 5 p.m. last Sunday at the Liberty Shrine in Barangay Mactan.
The circumnavigation was completed when the petite swimmer arrived at the Liberty Shrine at 10:37 a.m. Monday. ....

PARAÑAQUE CITY, Jan. 20 (PIA) The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Monday launched the Lapulapu 5000-Piso Commemorative Banknote and Medal to celebrate Lapulapu’s victory during the Battle of Mactan 500 years ago.  
According to the BSP, the launch marked the 99-day countdown to the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan on April 27, 1521, along with the Philippines’ historic part in the first circumnavigation of the world, collectively referred to as the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines.   ....

100-day countdown to 2021 PH Quincentennial Commemorations starts today


PARAÑAQUE CITY, Jan. 17 (PIA) Today marks the 100-day countdown to the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines (2021 QCP). Central in these commemorations is the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan on 27 April 2021 (the reckoning date of the countdown).  
The Lapu-Lapu City Government kicks-off the countdown at the Lapulapu Monument, Liberty Shrine, Mactan in Lapu-Lapu City in the morning.
Highlight of the event is the declaration of the shrine as a site of the permanent display of the Philippine flag through the NHCP Board Resolution No. 10, s. 2020.
Event guests include Office of the Presidential Adviser in the Visayas Secretary Michael Lloyd Dino, Philippine Information Agency Director-General Ramon Cualoping III, Lapu-Lapu City Lone District Representative Paz Radaza, Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, and Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan.  ....

Liter of Light, a Filipino-born global grassroots solar lighting movement, will build the largest 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines logo using solar lamps to mark the 100-day countdown to the 500th anniversary of the Victory in Mactan on January 17, 2021.
The organization’s installation is being done under the auspices of the National Quincentennial Committee (NQC), the inter-government institution created in 2018 to organize commemorative activities for the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan, the Philippine part in the first circumnavigation of the world, and other related events, collectively known as the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines (2021 QCP). ....

Quincentennial activities aim to commemorate PHL’s part in world’s first circumnavigation

Although it’s just the first few days of the year, the following weeks and months will be eventful as preparations are being made for the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines.
According to the National Quincentennial Committee (NQC), the year-long event celebrates the Philippines’ part in the world’s first circumnavigation.
The celebration marks several historically significant events, including the 500th anniversaries of the victory in Mactan and the start of Christianity in the country.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, NQC said it called the event the 500th anniversary of “the Philippine part in the first circumnavigation of the world” instead of “the contentious phrase ‘discovery of the Philippines’ and the ‘arrival of Magellan’” because our country had a flourishing civilization way befo ....
