The National Development and Reform Commission recently approved funding for a series of major airport construction projects in the Tibet autonomous region, Tibet Daily reported.
With a total investment of over 13.6 billion yuan ($2 billion), the projects include three new airports in the counties of Burang, Dingri and Lhunze, as well as a runway expansion at the region s Gongkar Airport.
It is expected that the projects will contribute significantly to the region s overall transportation network, including the travel needs of local people, emergency rescue and regional economic and social development. ....

A dike made of locally extracted clay is currently being tested in the Delta Flume of the Deltares knowledge institute, Hunze en Aa’s reports.
A full-size cross-section of the dyke was built in the gutter and then subjected to the conditions of a superstorm.
The tests are part of an extensive study into the suitability of circular clay as a material for dyke reinforcement.
The clay was extracted from salt marshes off the coast of Delfzijl and from harbor silt from the Ems-Dollard.

Until 1996, there were only three residents in the border village of Yumai, located in Tibet in the foothills of the Himalayas, a few kilometres from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) that separates India and China. By 2011, 25 others would join Zhoigar, a Tibetan herder, and her two family members, but Yumai would still hold the distinction of China’s least populated village. It is, also, as remote as border villages come, a long 200-km drive from Lhunze, the county capital, which itself is a 400-km drive from Lhasa. ....

This snowstorm was so massive it became a historical event. In terms of storm severity factors, this one had it all: enormous amounts of snow, frigid temperatures, howling winds whipping up monstrous snow drifts and a widespread area of effect that covered the entire northeastern United States from New England to the Chesapeake Bay, including major metropolitan areas like New York City [source: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration]. More than 400 people died during the storm, including more than 100 who were lost at sea.
The storm struck in early March and started out as a serious rainstorm. From Sunday night to Monday morning, the temperature plummeted and the rain turned to snow. In the end, New York City received 22 inches (56 centimeters) of snow, shutting the city down and causing floods when the snow melted. Other places received much more: 58 inches (1.5 meters) of snow in Saratoga Springs, New York, ....
