media incredibly important. the el paso times, erin is a watchdog reporter for the newspaper who joins me here. walk us through where you were yesterday. how you began to grasp what happened here with the shooting. sure. well generally, el paso media gets alerts from the police department about any incident, car crashes, if there s shooting in other part of town and just like aus, i received a message from the police saying there was an active shoot er at the walmart. you know right behind us. so it was about 11:30 a.m. i made my way here. found where ever i could go. i found myself in a spot where a lot of the people who had at walmart at the time of the shooting were starting to make their way out over to city buses so they could make their way back to their families and really that s when i really starteded to process just exact hi the magnitude. just being able to sense the people s emotions. and how draining these things were. morgan just a ago talking
could. they are just now bringing out some of the bodies that remaped in there. we heard from the investigators today at a press conference and they told me the shooter is cooperating with them, but wouldn t elaborate on what he s saying as this interrogation process goes forward. saying he was taken into custody without incident and right now, they re not really elaborating. staying very tight lipped as they continue to build this case against him which comes from a variety of fronts. both the state and federal level. both of those could potentially include the death penalty as this goes forward in time. what we are hearing is that they do hope to have this area cleared within the next few hours at the walmart, but reunify kags centers yesterday have now become grieving centers today and this is very much going to have a painful day here as the shock of the shooting really starting to sink in. you mentioned this as being treated as capital murder. how has that language evolved
well, i spoke to an anti-hate activist who talked about how he got indoctrinated into a hate group when he was younger and he said that what would have kept him from that path is if someone else had reached out to him in his youth, whether it be a coach or a mentor andrew yang, i m sorry to interrupt you, but we re i m sorry to interrupt you but we are going to go live now to las vegas where we are hearing from senator bernie sanders. so that we can think about and pray for the victims of the shooting. there are 20 dead in el paso and many wounded. and it never occurred to me that one day later, we would have to do that again because of the mass killing in dayton. so i want to thank the police officers who responded with incredible courage and skill in
welcome back. the last 24 hours in this country could be pivotal. two deadly mass shootings. at least 29 killed and more than 50 others injured in the attacks. here s what we know now. in taten, a 24-year-old white male identified as a gunman there was killed by police within a minute of opening fire at a busy entertainment district. at least nine were also killed and get this. moments ago, we learned the gunm gunman s own sister and her boyfriend were found shot dead inside of a car. investigators trying to figure out the motive there. that tragedy just hours after another gunman attacked an el paso shopping center, killing at least 20 people. investigators say they were only aware of an anti immigrant skreed outlining the attack shortly before the shooting.
i don t know what is. stand by. i m going to get pete know new reporting he s finding out. especially, i m curious about the reporting on the dayton suspect and this new information that his sister was one of the early victims? well one of the victims certainly, the and the importance of that i think is something they re trying to work through now. it does put a possibly different light on this. if it starts out as a family dispute that escalated into the shooting. that s just simply something that they re going to have to pursue. they say they don t know the answer to that. now we had heard first that the sister and her boyfriend were found shot in a car. that s what the early law enforcement reports had said from the scene. the police chief said that wasn t correct. that she was actually one of the people who were shot on the street outside the bar.
