ESCONDIDO
More than 1,000 people turned out Saturday afternoon in Escondido to celebrate a first in the city: its first Pride event.
And because it was the first such celebration in the inland North County city, lifelong resident William Soto made it a point to attend the event at Kit Carson Park.
“I’ve been around 31 years and we have never had anything like this,” Soto said. “I was surprised, but at the same time I think it was about time.”
“I honestly thought it was going to be a lot smaller. And it’s really cool seeing all the youth,” he said. “It’s definitely a different generation, and I didn’t realize there were so many people so supportive.”

Escondido Police officer Chad Moore fatally shot Steven John Olson, a houseless community member, on the morning of April 21 shortly after 7 am. Police claimed that he was holding a metal bar and threatened the officer. Video from after the incident and eyewitness testimonies seem to conflict with key points of Escondido PD’s version of events. Activists in Escondido called a protest on the night of the shooting, and continued the fight for transparency and accountability with a rally one week later at City Hall.
