Court overturns conviction of former N.J. cop in police overtime theft case

A former Plainfield police officer who forfeited her position as part of a guilty plea in a departmental theft case has won an appeal that throws out her conviction and sends the matter back to the trial court.
A state appeals court found the way Leslie Knight’s case ended in a guilty plea had factual problems.
Knight was a sergeant in 2014 when she and another officer, then Lt. James Abney, were indicted on several dozen crimes accusing them of falsifying time sheets and police records to generate extra pay themselves for overtime or extra duty shifts they did not work. ....

Plainfield police officer can withdraw guilty plea that cost her job

PLAINFIELD – A former city police officer has won her appeal allowing her to withdraw her guilty plea in connection with a charge that she overbilled Plainfield for overtime.
Leslie Knight, who was a sergeant in the police department, forfeited her job because of her plea to a downgraded disorderly conduct charge. She was also ordered to pay $1,530 in restitution. 
Knight had been charged in September 2014 with overbilling the city for more than 30 overtime and extra-duty shifts, netting her more than $6,800 in 2012 and 2013. 
She was indicted on four counts of official misconduct, three counts of third-degree theft by deception, 12 counts of fourth-degree theft by deception and single counts of tampering with public records, falsifying records, computer theft and conspiracy. ....
