Nature Nights Will Continue Through the Summer for Youth in the Duluth Area

GARY NEW DULUTH, Minn. – Getting kids off cell phones, and into the forest. It’s a goal of one teacher in the Gary New Duluth neighborhood as the community’s rec center continues to host Nature Nights.
“In spring, kids should smell like dirt,” said Leslie Bucar, youth director at the Gary New Duluth Rec Center.
You can practically smell the excitement at the Gary New Duluth Rec Center.
“I tell parents I will return your children to you tired, happy, and dirty,” said Bucar.

On Thursday in Gary New Duluth, kids got to teach the community about all kinds of nature topics at nature night.
The Duluth Area YMCA collaborated with Duluth Public Schools and the Gary New Duluth Rec. Center to hold this fun filled event.
It came about by the youth wanting to help educate others about the forests after recent vandalism in the area. They taught how to take care of the woods, fire safety, and enjoying campfire snacks.
Kids got to teach several outdoor topics including fire safety to the community in Gary New Duluth during their Nature Night on Thursday.

Duluth Kids Dig Into History of Groundhog Day
At the Gary New Duluth Rec Center, kids got to learn all about Groundhogs, the history of the holiday, and other fun facts.

DULUTH, Minn- On Tuesday, we’ll find out if we get six more weeks of winter or an early spring on Groundhog Day and on Monday some kids in Duluth learned more about the tradition.
As part of the YMCA’s twice-a-week programming at the Gary New Duluth Rec Center, kids got to learn all about Groundhogs, the history of the holiday, and other fun facts and woodchuck-related crafts.

This week, kids learned all about winter birds
The students even built and painted their own bird feeders which are being placed outdoors near the rec center.
Staff say this program could help teach kids the importance of nature.
“It’s a gift to us. It’s up to them and their generation to take on that mantle and protect it,” said Leslie Bucar, the youth director for the Gary-New Duluth Recreation Center. “Being able to see what we have just in our own backyard, will make them lifetime lovers and learners of nature.”
