Inside how Botswana Railways slips on its lies

7th February 2021 An investigation into the 2019 Botswana Railways passenger train fatal accident has revealed a toxic culture of bullying, manipulation and outright lying by management in a bid to cover up fatal flaws and safety failures. The investigation report compiled by an inquiry board chaired by Olebile Moakofi concluded that., If it was not for failure in the critical decision-making process at the helm of BR’s top management, despite direct advice to stop trains, this accident could have been averted.” Botswana Railways was woefully unprepared for the accident that killed two crew members and lied to the Board of Inquiry about the extent to which Botswana’s rail transport system was unsafe.

Zambia : New rail line to link SA to Zambia

The new line will also link Botswana from Mosetse with Zambia through Kazungala. Effectively this creates a line running from South Africa to Zambia via Botswana. Appearing before a Bostwana parliamentary committee, the chief executive of Botswana Railways (BR) Leonard Makwinja said the route made economic sense. “That would be a shorter route for our big commodities. It makes more sense to build a shorter route rather than build another one parallel to the Mafikeng one,” said Makwinja in reference to an existing rail link. Construction of the new line will begin in April 2021, and it will include a 4km bridge over the Limpopo River.

BR struggles to fill vacant CEO post? | Sunday Standard

16th December 2020 The Botswana Railways (BR) is apparently struggling to find a suitable candidate to fill the vacant position of chief executive officer (CEO). The post becomes vacant at the end of this month when the incumbent CEO – Leonard Makwinja is expected to exit.  Makwinja’s contract was not renewed after President Mokgweetsi Masisi constituted a commission of enquiry to investigate circumstances that led to the derailment of Botswana Railways passenger train in December 2019, near Bonwapitse river resulting in two BR employees losing their lives. The commission of inquiry has since completed the investigations and the bulky report has long been handed to the minister of transport and communications, Thulagano Segokgo, who is also expected to table the report before parliament sometime next year.
