Reflections: Past Memorial Days in Cardington Reading about past Memorial Day observances in Cardington brings memories. Earlier I submitted a few from very early years, but today I am focusing on those within my memory. All of these services were held at the Civil War Monument in Glendale Cemetery. May, 1956 Rev. A. E. Clark, pastor of Salem EUB church gave the address at the May 30, 1956 program. Flower donations to this program were taken by Leonard Benson. Rev. Theodore Partridge gave the invocation and benediction. The parade included the high school band, the Post Drum and Bugle Corps, Boy Scouts, school groups and patriotic organizations. ....
Reflections: Here comes the band! Sabres Drum and Bugle Corps somewhere in the 1930s. I remember hearing that shout when the Sabres Drum and Bugle Corps was marching in a parade. Although the band disbanded in the early 1970s, it had attracted many followers. The band was founded in 1927, organized in January when a resolution was placed on American Legion Post 97’s books to donate $100 towards its organizing which was done by the late Guy Mathews and Paul D. Fleming .Mathews later becoming the director of the band. Members played drums, bugles, bass bugles and trumpets. At one time there were more than 40 members. ....
