Three young women who put their hearts into teaching Lenoir County Public Schools’ youngest students have surfaced as finalists for the district honor of 2021-2022 Teacher of the Year.
Selection of Shalona Newkirk of Northwest Elementary School, Heather Sloan of Banks Elementary School and Darylanne Towery of Contentnea-Savannah K-8 School was announced Wednesday afternoon after a panel of judges had completed virtual interviews with 18 nominees – each school’s choice as Teacher of the Year for 2021-2022.
“Let me say you are all winners,” district human resources director Pam Health, who directs the Teacher of the Year program, told nominees gathered virtually for the announcement of finalists. “It was so hard to narrow down. There are only three slots and every one of you deserves one of those three slots. You made us so proud.” ....

A $50,000 grant awarded through the national No Kid Hungry program to Lenoir County Public Schools will help stock emergency food pantries at middle and high schools and provide meals to carry at-risk students through their weekends.

“We wanted to do something for middle schools and high schools because there are a lot of programs that we’ve been doing for elementary schools,” Smith said. “We need more resources for our older students.” ....

Lenoir County Public Schools plans to begin on-site rapid testing for COVID-19 in mid-January as part of a pilot program developed by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
On Thursday, NCDHHS announced 17 public school districts and 11 charter schools as participants in the program, which is designed is to slow the spread of Covid-19 by quickly identifying students and staff who may have the virus, especially after the holiday season, according to the state agency.
“The test isn’t really looking for the negatives; it’s looking for the positives,” said LCPS school nurse April Hardy said. “We’re going to have those students who don’t have one of those exclusionary systems like a cough or fever but they might have a runny nose.
