And the band played on: Remembering various group names The Monroe News Saturday evening I had a great time singing at Monroe Post 1138, Veterans of Foreign Wars for not only my comrades-in-arms but old friends who came to enjoy the fun, food, fellowship and music. While there, someone told me they had been coming to hear me sing since The Club, Monroe’s teenage nightclub of the 1960’s, which meant we were both old! And how a man of his size could dance the way he did, all the while doing it on such little feet, was amazing to me. But, then again, using the word “amazing” was easy when discussing his voice, the way he played piano or his ability to whip a congregation or community gathering into a spiritual frenzy. He was one of a kind. I had heard about him early on, especially in my musical career as he was one of the best ever to come from our quaint little town.
