Thaw in Nepal's relations with China


Nepalese businessmen have protested against China both at Rasuwagadhi and Tatopani checkpoints at the Nepal-China border. They even accused China of imposing an unofficial blockade as container trucks loaded with importable consumer items have not been permitted to cross the Nepal-China border into Nepal. To harass Nepalese traders, the Chinese transporters even increased freight charges along the nearly 26 km stretch between the Chinese border point and the Nepalese border from RMB 15,000-16,000 to 60,000-65,000. The Nepalese traders have talked to the Chinese authorities on these issues, but there has been no positive outcome.
During the protests, they asked China to ensure smooth movement of containers from China to Nepal and to also abide by international trade laws and transit agreements. They also asked for China take the initiative to end the undeclared blockade. ....

Kathmandu, March 14 The CPN-UML, which was revived by the Supreme Court last week, appears to be headed for a split.
While the group led by party chair and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is trying to tighten its grip with his own decisions, the group led by Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhala Nath Khanal has decided to hold a national gathering on March 17-18 in Kathmandu and form parallel party committees.
We have decided to revive and reorganise all the previous committees of the CPN-UML throughout the country, including its affiliated professional organisations, said Bhim Rawal, a Standing Committee member, from the Nepal-Khanal group. ....

Nepal s CPN (Maoist Centre) led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda on Sunday asked its ministers in Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli s government to resign en masse for breaching party discipline, amid their reluctance to quit the Cabinet.
This is the second time the splinter faction of the Nepal Communist Party has instructed its ministers in the Oli government to resign from their posts.
The Central Committee meeting of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) on Sunday asked Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa and Energy Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi to resign en masse for breaching party discipline, My Republica newspaper reported. ....
