Two Democrats have filed nominating petitions to run for two open seats on the Princeton Council, eliminating any official political primary fight in the June 8  Democratic Party primary.
Incumbent Princeton Councilwoman Eve Niedergang and Leighton Newlin filed their nominating petitions by the April 5 deadline. Princeton Councilman Dwaine Williamson is not seeking re-election.
No one had filed to run for the Republican Party nomination in the June 8 Republican Party primary by the April 5 deadline.
Absent a write-in candidate, the Princeton Council election will be decided in the June 8 primary because of the lack of nominees on the Republican Party ticket and challengers in the Democratic Party primary. ....

Planning board recommends Princeton Shopping Center neighborhood for "area in need of redevelopment" designation -


According to a consultant hired by the Princeton Council to study whether the Princeton Shopping Center neighborhood should be declared an area in need of redevelopment, the shopping center is a sea of underused parking fields, the courtyard area in the middle of the center rarely sees much activity, the configuration of the center is terrible, the infrastructure is ancient, and the vacancy rate is alarming but has nothing to do with the pandemic.
“It’s about to go into the abyss if it hasn’t already,” planner Carlos Rodrigues told the Princeton Planning Board on Thursday evening when discussing the shopping center’s vacancy rate, which he estimated to be 19.5 percent or higher. ....

Project for mixed-use building at Griggs Corner receives approval from Planning Board
Palmer Square Management LLC has received final approval from the Princeton Planning Board to develop a 24-space metered parking lot into a mixed-use building.
The parking lot on the corner of Witherspoon Street and Hulfish Street would be developed as a three-story, mixed-use building. Final site plan approval was granted by the board on April 8.
Planning Board Chair Wanda Gunning, Vice Chair Louise Wilson, and Planning Board members Julie Capozzoli, Councilman David Cohen, Alvin McGowen, Jeffrey Oakman, Councilwoman Mia Sacks, Zenon Tech-Czarny and Phil Chao voted “yes” to approve the project, which would be constructed opposite the Princeton Public Library. ....
