EDITORIAL: Indigenous issues need attention

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday announced that Taiwan had become a founding member of the New Zealand-initiated Indigenous Peoples Economic and Trade Cooperation Arrangement (IPETCA).
The non-binding agreement of which Canada and Australia are also members aims to promote the economic empowerment of indigenous peoples in the Asia-Pacific region. Such initiatives not only recognize the interests of Taiwan’s original inhabitants, but also help differentiate Taiwan from China.
Little is heard outside of China about the majority of its 56 recognized minorities, while the Uighur and Tibetan peoples are recognized globally as victims of human rights abuses by the ....

Talks are under way to expand Internet coverage in mountainous areas, Council of Indigenous Peoples Minister Icyang Parod said yesterday when questioned by legislators over the connectivity gap experienced by remote indigenous communities.

During the question-and-answer session, Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) asked what the council intends to do to address connectivity challenges in remote indigenous communities.

EDITORIAL: KMT losing ground, losing touch

Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Cheng Li-wun’s (鄭麗文) confrontation with Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) on Wednesday backfired, with people posting thousands of comments on her Facebook page showing support for the head of the Central Epidemic Command Center as the KMT once again demonstrated that it is out of touch with the nation.
“I’m with you, minister A-chung (阿中),” many posts read, referring to a common nickname for Chen, while others criticized Cheng, after their heated exchange at a meeting of the legislature’s Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee.
A group of KMT legislators protested the meeting ....

The government expects soon to sign a deal for additional doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said yesterday.
