It’s hard not to mythologize Bryan A. Garner. He is the Herakles of English usage. As a boy growing up in Texas, he lugged Webster’s Third New International Dictionary (Unabridged) to school one day to settle an argument with a teacher. When he was sixteen, he discovered “Fowler’s Modern English Usage” and swallowed it whole. By the time he was an undergraduate, he knew that he wanted to write a usage dictionary. Instead of going into academia or publishing, the traditional career paths for English majors, he went into law, a field where his prodigious language skills could have broad applications. His first usage dictionary was “Modern Legal Usage,” published in 1987. “Garner’s Modern American Usage” came out in 1998 and is in its fourth edition; with a significant tweaking of the title, it’s now “Garner’s Modern ....

First, you need to know who Bryan Garner is. He’s arguably the world’s greatest living lexicographer of the English language. I’m not sure the “arguably” hedge is needed. Most folks who write for a living have a copy of
Garner’s Modern American Usage close at hand. He also wrote
Garner’s Dictionary of Legal Usage, and he runs LawProse, a company that, among other things, teaches lawyers how to write more clearly.
