CSPAN2 Key Capitol Hill Hearings June 22, 2024

Cause of the surge. What i want this hearing to date to talk about and the incentives we create in this country and in our laws for people to come to this country legally. We are a nation of immigrants. We need to recognize the fact that people that come into the this country by and large are coming for the exact reasons our ancestors came. They are seeking the opportunity this country offers people. We need to understand that to a certain extent we need to respect that if it is done legally. We cannot tolerate an unsecure border and a policy of immigration that is based on illegal immigration. We have to look at the law and the incentives for immigration. I would look at defered action of childhood arrivals as an incentive that creates this problem. That is what i want to gleam from the testimony and questions we are ask. Peoples lives are put at risk because of these incentives. The other point i want to make is the difficulty in getting the information to solve this problem. Part of ....

Trust is everything to me. Thats why for all we have accomplished in state gos government, our job is not done until we clean up the corruption. So im appointing a new independent commissioner led by top officials from all across the great state to investigate and prosecute wrong doing. Politicians in albany wont like it, but i work with the people and i wont stop fighting until we all have a government we can trust. Andrew cuomo is spending millions of our tax on ads that are not true. Guess what state ranks dead last in Economic Outlook . Cuomos new york. Has the highest property taxes in the nation, cuomos new york. Andrew cuomos policies have new york last in too many categories, and no amount of taxpayer ads could change that. New york has a proud history of fighting for the nation. Its shocking rob astorino has violated Discrimination Laws for years. Hes the only ....

Conversation. I think that in addition to the reports that my organization has done, several reports that npi has produced, reports that the Bipartisan Policy Center put out, here is what is true and undeniably true, that last year there were only 10,000 nonborder recent border crosser ee crossers, noncriminals deported. You can level 3 and a single misdemeanor is an illegitimate criteria for deportation. I agree. We should eliminate the lower end. To deny as i would argue that many members in the media and many of the immigration groups have done of the substantial and significant and undeniable changes that have gone on i am not telling you that 10,000 is an acceptable number. Its too many. Still too many. We got to do better than this. But what is clear its on my website. Its on their website. Its on five other organizations websites, is that the its the policy of the

Government that theyre unfamiliar with and, you know, i think its great that the high number of latino members of your force that you have. How do you make sure that theyre really truly grounded and what it is that these people may be trying to or want to communicate but maybe afraid to communicate to operate under the corridor of law. Yes, we are familiar with the various communities in mexico. At the individual agent level, i cannot speak to that. What i can say is that they are trained to be consistent in terms of how we process people and to treat people with dignity and respect. That is a core principle of cdp. I cant speak to the individual offices of assessment. But i can speak to what we ask them to do. This question is for mr. Jones. And it kind of follows up on the direction in which commissioner yaki has been hinting. But it would appear that the custom and border officers are critical players in this immigration process. And the screening and the selection and the training ....

Translation question and answer system, do you have that in place . And how do you assure that the answers that youre getting are real. I can tell you, from my own experience dealing with Asylum Seekers in other countries sometimes you need to ask. There are cultural issues about can you really ask them about rape, can you ask them about other family members . Are they afraid that any answer that they give to you is going to then be communicated back to their home country. So they tend not to be as truthful as they should be. I think the chairmans question pertained to mexican nationals. So, with regard to mexican nationals, all of the Border Patrol agents speak spanish. And so thats the thing we focus on as an agency that we are con sis tent and that we are fair and ensure that everyone is properly interviewed. Do you have someone, for example, who understands country conditi ....
