Sometime – not today, not tomorrow, not the day after, but sometime – professional combat sports events will return to New Mexico.
Members of the New Mexico Athletic Commission, the state board that regulates combat sports, want to help make that happen.
But, with the COVID-19 pandemic still alive and accompanying protocols still in place, the question is how.
And when.

“We need to start getting ready for when we do start having events,” chairman Joe Chavez said at Tuesday’s NMAC meeting, held via Cisco WebEx.
Compliance with public health orders, Chavez said, is a given. “But we’re gonna have to have our own kind of rules because of COVID for the fighters and our officials and the people participating. … We’re probably not going to be doing any fights within the next 60 days, but I want to start getting ready for what we’ ....

Becoming unofficially the co-best prospect in the world wasn’t enough for Albuquerque boxer Aaron Angel Perez.
A draw, even achieved against a highly touted, heavily favored opponent on boxing’s big stage, wasn’t what Perez had come to Dallas for.
“I feel like I won it,” Perez (10-0-1, six knockouts) said in a phone interview Sunday after having fought to an eight-round featherweight draw against hot prospect Raymond Ford (8-0-1, four KOs). The bout was streamed internationally on DAZN, part of a blockbuster card staged by Matchroom Boxing. ....

Getting a New Mexico boxer to the top rungs of the sport, however talented the fighter, has never been easy.
Bob Foster, Johnny Tapia, Danny Romero, Austin Trout and Angelo Leo, who all would become world champions, had to pay their dues in the hinterlands before getting their big break.
Had Albuquerque promoter Lenny Fresquez not signed Holly Holm to a contract in 2004, Holm’s ride to the top of women’s boxing might have taken far longer and been far bumpier. ....

Dana White is arrogant and obnoxious, and he works at it. No, labors at it. White, the president and the face of the UFC, the most powerful entity in the world of combat sports, probably wouldn’t even disagree with that assessment.
But White definitely would agree with this: he’s a visionary who makes things happen and refuses to be told he can’t.
The above might strike you as a curious way to begin a New Mexico combat-sports year-end column. To link the names of White and Angelo Leo in that regard might seem even more curious. ....
