CONCERT pianists must have the physical stamina of an athlete, and the dexterity of a juggler. They must have the ability to carry millions of notes in their heads. Often eccentric, sometimes tipping over into madness, they must have a monastic dedication to their art. They are a breed apart.
And so are the people who set up competitions to rank them. For many years the British pianistic scene was dominated by the Leeds Competition, run by the formidable Dame Fanny Waterman who died last December aged 99. And when a Lithuanian pianist named Sulamita Aronovsky set up the London International Piano Competition in 1986, Dame Fanny was outraged at what she saw as an invasion of her turf. But Sulamita was just as formidable, and her roster of winners soon equalled the calibre of those in Leeds: as a result, virtuoso pianism in Britain thrived as never before. ....

Leeds Competition announces Virtual First Round shortlist

The Leeds International Piano Competition has selected 63 pianists from 28 countries to take part in this year’s Virtual First Round, which will be held in cities around the world from 6 to 10 April 2021.
The competition’s pre-selection jury, chaired by artistic director Adam Gatehouse, listened to 264 applicants – a 43 per cent increase in applications since the previous competition in 2018. Four British nationals have been selected as well as competitors from Morocco, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Iran, Israel and Peru.
Local film crews have been lined up to capture the first round performances in high-definition sound and vision. The jury will hear a 25-minute recital from each of the 63 pianists before selecting 24 to go through to the second round in Leeds. ....

Yorkshire's First Lady of Music: Dame Fanny Waterman remembered

“ALL roads lead to Leeds and all roads lead from Leeds:” The legendary Leeds piano teacher who died last month, delivered her strapline to a glittering audience at the Finals of the 14th Leeds International Piano Competition.
One summer night in 1961, Fanny Waterman discussed with husband Dr Geoffrey de Keyser her audacious proposal for a world class piano competition in the city. The popular Morley family doctor with an encyclopedic knowledge of piano music, was at first dismissive: “This must be held in London”. Geoffrey’s response merely stiffened Fanny’s resolve.
A steering committee soon swung into action. Those on the “key board” were Fanny, Geoffrey, Roslyn Lyons - wife of the Leeds financier and arts philanthropist Jack Lyons, and concert pianist Marion Lascelles (nee Stein) Countess of Harewood from 1949-67. Fanny had taught the Lascelles boys to play the piano. She later confided in David, now Lord Harewood, that he had been one of her worst ....
