HERE’S how quickly, how dangerously, artificial intelligence is moving: one day after Brian Christian sat in his office, near Berkeley University in California, warning The Herald on Sunday about the imminent perils of a powerful AI being sent out onto social media by a rogue state to ramp up online hate and division, South Korea turned its worried attention to a character called Lee Luda.
Luda is just 20. She is a university student who gained 750,000 “friends” on Facebook in three weeks. The only problem is that Luda isn’t a woman, or a student, or 20, or Korean. “She” is an Artificial Intelligence – and “she” had to be removed from Facebook after causing outrage with attacks on sexual minorities and disabled people. What makes Luda even more troubling is that the AI has an almost identical name to a South Korean popsta ....

Seoul: The South Korean developer of a controversial female chatbot said on Friday that it will discard all data and learning algorithms used in training the artificial intelligence (AI) platform amid mounting criticism over its data collection process and hate speech.
Scatter Lab, a Seoul-based startup, said it has decided to pull the plug on its 20-year-old female chatbot persona called Lee Luda and dispose of its database and deep learning algorithms to address concerns among its users.
The company on Monday temporarily suspended the Facebook-based chatbot, 20 days after beginning its service, in response to complaints over its discriminatory and offensive language against sexual minorities. Some male users were even able to manipulate the bot into engaging in sexual conversations. ....

A social media-based artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot named “Lee Luda” has been suspended Monday after stirring a series of controversies, raising a new topic of conversation in our society regarding technological advancement and AI ethics.
In a statement on Monday, local startup developer Scatter Lab apologized for the controversy involving the chatbot, saying they would bring back the service after upgrading the program to prevent a recurrence. Designed to mimic a 20-year-old woman, the chatbot has become a subject of controversy with its discriminatory remarks against homosexuals, the disabled, women and others in its conversation with users. ....
