Hillcrest Students Focus on Service During SALT

April 16th through the 20th, Hillcrest Academy students stepped outside the classroom to turn their focus toward community service during their Service and Learning Term, or SALT. This is a program the school participates in every other year. It is defined by the district as a week-long innovative learning experience outside of the normal classroom that focuses on putting their beliefs into action by bringing service to others. Goals for the program include a sense of community and group dynamics for participants, service to others, exposure to new cultures and points of view, educational enrichment and spiritual and personal growth. This week, Hillcrest Academy SALT advisor Marcus Miller talked about how they choose projects and destinations, challenges related to the pandemic, and his goals for students. “This year with the pandemic the idea was to find local places to serve. reporter: is this going to happen all over again in a few months? no. reporter: jim acosta, cnn, washington. let s see if he can keep that promise. the deal is done. this morning, the first step in negotiating a learning term solution is set to begin with the head of the senate budget committee patty murray and paul ryan scheduled to talk this morning. what is the goal for this meeting? i guess we should be talking about longer term because we are on the heels of facing this again? that s right, good morning. reporter: the goal for this meeting is to begin talks on a longer term solution. these folks have to get together and come up with a budget for the rest of fiscal end of 2014 which ends next september and seems like a long way away but it isn t a long time. they have to submit a report in mid september. challenges have plagued this issue on both sides for a long time. they have to talk about entitlement reforms, tax reforms ....
