Rachael Hamilton: John PatonDay s mafia jibe inflammatory

A PROMINENT SNP member in the Borders has been criticised for comparing the Conservatives to the mafia . In the recent Leaderdale and Melrose by-election for Scottish Borders Council, John PatonDay, of the SNP, was defeated by Scottish Conservative representative Jenny Linehan. Following the result, Mr PatonDay was quoted in the Southern Reporter as saying: “I’m gutted. I’m just amazed that people can possibly vote for Tories – it’s like voting for the mafia.” On the comment, Borders MSP Rachael Hamilton said: “I am shocked at the SNP’s John PatonDay and his comments about the newly elected councillor Jenny Linehan on her victory last week.

Hawick: £90k drugs found in empty flat after flood reports

CANNABIS with a “potential street value of £90,000” has been discovered in an empty flat in the Borders, say police. Firefighters were called to a property in Beaconsfield Terrace, Hawick, at 1pm on Friday following reports of flooding. When a cannabis cultivation was found, police executed a Misuse of Drugs Warrant and recovered cannabis “with a potential street value of £90,000”, according to a police spokesperson.  The spokesperson added that officers had to call out the electricity board as the supply at the flat had been “dangerously bypassed”. Sergeant Rourke, of the Scottish Borders Community Action Team, said: Tackling drug misuse remains one of our key priorities and this is clearly a significant recovery of Class B drugs
