The Australian seaside village of Lennox Head will not hold a Championship Tour (CT) event at Lennox Head, New South Wales.
The Ballina Shire Council rejected a World Surf League (WSL) competition at the iconic point break.
WSL wanted to add an extra venue to this year s Australian CT leg, but the authorities voted against it after several protests from local surfers and residents.
The decision not to provide support for the event was based on the risk of spreading Covid-19 and the negative impacts caused by overcrowding during the holiday period and loss of amenity. ....

Update, 2.25pm: Ballina Shire Council has called an extraordinary meeting to discuss the World Surf League s plan to hold an event in Lennox Head.
General manager Paul Hickey said the meeting would be held at 4pm on Wednesday.
The aim will be to clarify what is proposed for the WSL event and whether the council supports it.
Mr Hickey said the council and councillors had received positive and negative feedback about the WSL proposal.
Cr Keith Williams said the proposal was a major event that needed careful consideration .
I understand the Lennox event is a one off replacement of Bells Beach due to the potential disruption caused by state borders at the moment, he said. ....

After a whirlwind week of meetings and rushed consultation with local community groups, Ballina Shire councillors will meet this afternoon to decide whether to support a World Surf League event for Lennox Head.
It all started last Thursday, when council representatives attended a confidential meeting with the WSL and the state government to discuss the idea.
The proposed event is a professional championship short board surfing competition for men and women, which would be held from April 1-11.
Bumping in/out would extend the event period from March 25 until April 14.
The event would be part of the 2021 WSL Championship Tour, with expected crowd attendance currently proposed for 2000 to 3000 spectators, the council s report states. ....

Funding for events in 2021: $120K announced from council

EIGHT festivals and events for 2021/22 will share council sponsorship funds from a total of $120,000 approved in their latest meeting.
The list of events benefited with the funding from Ballina Shire Council was:
Love Lennox Festival 2022 by Lennox Head Chamber of Commerce: $20,000
Skullcandy Oz Grom Open 2021 by Le Ba Boardriders: $25,000
Lennox Head surfer Nyxie Ryan is chaired up the beach after winning the Under-16 girls division at the Skullcandy Oz Grom Open 2019.
Craft and Garden Fair 2021 by Quota International Alstonvile / Wollongbar: $8,000
New Year’s Eve Family Festival by Alstonville Agricultural Society: $20,000
Fair Go Skatefest 2020 by Truckstop Sk8: $5,000 ....
