Back in the day newspapers would bind individual issues into volumes. Libraries would then have shelves of them that you could peruse.
Then along came microfilm, which made copies that were smaller and took up far less space. This led libraries to get rid of their bound volumes the only place that seems to have a big collection of old daily newspapers on newsprint is the Legislative Library in Victoria.

The latest wrinkle is that microfilm for some papers has been digitized by companies like Newspapers.com. This is a Godsend for researchers, because it’s far easier to search through papers online than on microfilm, which is a bit of a pain. You can also do a word search, which is amazing. ....
