Some Missourians Facing Unemployment Overpayments Are Appealing — And Winning

Sandra Griffin sits on her porch in south St. Louis. The state of Missouri is demanding that more than 46,000 people pay back unemployment benefits they received. In December, the state told Griffin she owed nearly $8,000 but she s appealing the decision.
The state is demanding that more than 46,000 people pay back money the state said it mistakenly overpaid them last year.
Sandra Griffin was hesitant about filing for unemployment after the pandemic hit.
The 63-year-old St. Louis resident wasn’t used to the state’s online unemployment platform, and she called a few times over the summer to make sure she was doing it right. Every time, she said, she was met with reassurances. ....

Deseray Hendrickson owes $4,000 in back rent to Spokane Housing Ventures, the owner of the 55th Avenue Apartments. But she s not the only one. The low-income housing provider has been grappling with $450,000 in unpaid rent.
Like most tenants, Amy March has her complaints about the place she s renting.
There s the bathroom sink, broken for over a year, that s forced her family to wash their hands in the bathtub instead. There was a busted pipe that flooded their basement for three days. There are the complete addicts living nearby.
Yet, for all this, what really scares her is that she and her family might be forced to leave. She knows what the alternative is. The 40-year-old has lived it. ....
