Left in good hands, Tate to retire from Yellow Mountain Enterprises


NEWLAND — Few institutions in Avery County are as loved and revered as Yellow Mountain Enterprises, although such organizations do not become what they are today without superior leadership. For the last 10 years, David Tate has led the organization from the brink of bankruptcy to where it is today. For this reason, he is now looking toward the future ahead and retiring from the nonprofit once the organization finds his replacement.
“I’ve worked too hard and too long for it not to continue,” Tate said. “My motivation for retirement now is not so much personal, but this is a good time for the organization. Things are more financially stable than they have ever been.” ....

50 years ago: The Feb. 11, 1971, edition of
The AJT featured an article entitled ”Avery’s Tate Stars at ASU.” That little guard who starred at working the ball in to seven-foot-plus center Tommy Burleson at nearby Avery High a couple of years back is now making it big here for Appalachian State’s Mountaineers. He’s Bobby Tate, a mere six feet,155-pounder whose 20 point-effort last Saturday night led the Apps to a 72-68 upset win over Lenoir-Rhyne. Tate hit 8-of-11 shots from the floor in the game, including the winning basket on a twisting underhand layup with 23 seconds to go and the insurance basket with four seconds to go on the fast break after driving the length of the court past three L-R players. ....
