Final conclusion as to what caused this crash. dr. kobilinsky, let me follow up on something you said. it may be that i misunderstood. i believe you said the bodies wouldn t have been found floating if there hadn t been some decomposition. what did you mean by that? well, normally, the body is going to have some level of air in the lungs. as a result of decomposition, microbes are going to produce gases, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen sulfide. and these gases pervade the tissues and body cavities and that gives buoyancy to the bodies. then the bodies will rise and float. obviously the plane has been opened up giving access of these bodies to the surface. but that s what it would require, gas in the body that would allow the body to float. ....
Identification. obviously if you have a toothbrush or a container the person drank out of, you can secure a real true exemplar and then make the comparison that way. should not be a situation once all the samples are collected. dr. kobilinsky, thank you so much. i m afraid we had some problems with the satellite feed from heidi snow. we hope to check in with her later today. sorry about that to her. we are now seeing pieces of the wreckage from this plane. already those pieces are yielding clues about what happened in the flight s final moments. we ll have details on that coming up. ....
And he s a faithful husband, a great husband. i can t name all his qualities. he s a great husband for me. reporter: with stories like these and an aircraft crashes, disappearing planes, we talk about the search and the investigation and what happened, but at its heart as you heard from the wife of the captain of the airasia flight, this is a story it s a human tragedy. 162 passengers and crew on board that plane. and chances are good that none of those people survived and none of them will be coming home. very sad. thank you, david molko. now comes, of course, the process of identifying the men, women and children whose remains will be found and brought ashore in the days or weeks ahead. joining me to talk about that are the noted forensic scientists, lawrence kobilinsky and heidi snow. ....
We ve seen quite clearly that there was a stranglehold and a choke being applied. and it really is insulting to everyone s intelligence and it s an insult to professional policing to come up with these excuses and rationalizations for what we all saw and what is obvious and known and established by scientific fact. what was the cause of death, dr. kobilinsky? i believe i haven t seen the autopsy report. inn fortunately, it hasn t been released yet. but i do believe the medical examiner talked about a couple of things. first of all, the chokehold. secondly, the prone position. could have been what we call a positional asphyxia, and thirdly, compression of the chest, also known as burking. the way people normally breathe is the muscles of the diaphragm as well as the muscles within the ribs, what they do is they raise the chest up and outward. ....
There must be a national response. joining me now, former prosecutor and msnbc legal analyst judge fey jenkins, dr. lawrence kobilinsky, a forensic scientist and professor at john jay college of criminal justice. and mark claxton, former new york police officer and director of the black law enforcement alliance. thank you all for being here. sure, thanks. is the system broken? obviously, when it doesn t work, there s a problem with the process. it s time for us to re-examine the process. the officer can say it was a wrestling move, it wasn t a chokehold. he can describe it however he wants to describe it. the medical examiner said it was a chokehold. and it was the cause of death. eric garner said 11 times he could not breathe and that officer continued to apply pressure. even when he finally released his neck, what was the purpose ....
