Art Valet: UH art students emerge with sculpture exhibit

For the past three semesters, University of Houston sculpture artists have been forced to work in virtual isolation. After a year of canceled exhibitions, limited studio access and online-only classes, the 22 students prevailed and now present an exhibition titled Annex Energy.
Annex Energy is a tribute to the resilience of the UH sculpture program during the time of COVID-19. SITE Gallery Houston at Sawyer Yards, 1502 Sawyer St., is displaying the exhibit through Aug. 19. It is free and open to the public.
âAnnex Energy was named to recognize the UH School of Art graduates and current students who have contributed so much to the Houston art scene since the explosive energy of the Lawndale Annex, to the South Park Annex and now the new building at Elgin Street Studios,â said Michelle Matthews, organizer and a sculpture graduate student. ....

Texas Art Curator Clint Willour Dies: 1941 - 2021

Clint Willour, a giant of the Texas art scene, died of cancer on Thursday, February 4, 2021. He was 79.
Throughout his nearly 50-year career, the impact Mr. Willour had on the transformation of Houston into a destination for art cannot be overstated. He arrived in the city in 1970, when its contemporary art scene was fledgling, and his ethos and generosity continued to influence on the city’s museums, nonprofits, and galleries until his death.
Mr. Willour is perhaps best known across Texas for his 25-year stint as curator at the Galveston Arts Center (GAC) a nonprofit, non-collecting art space located in the port city. During his tenure as curator, from 1990 to 2016, he oversaw multiple exhibition spaces in the building and organized the Galveston Art Walk into a successful, regular event. At GAC, Mr. Willour gave many Texas artists their first institutional exhibition opportunities; he would include young artists alongside Texas stalwarts in group show ....
