question. this is a political question. law enforcement in my experience, in my engagement with law enforcement favors laws to take away weapons from people with mental health issues. the question is, how much latitude do politicians give law enforcement to take a weapon away. forget about whether someone commits a crime. if someone threatens their mother, can law enforcement go to a judge and say, we want that person to have a weapon taken away indefinitely? the cover that politicians give law enforcement to take weapons away is critical. this is not solely a law enforcement question. it s a judge question, it s a politicians question. juliette, you were going to chime in on that. yeah, no, i agree with that. and i also think that the radicalization issue, i want to we have to be careful about what the motive is, and look, often, there s mixed motives, right? often, there s a personal issue, other mental health issues, some
target against the lgbtq community. we can say there might be other motives, but this is my, you know, we would have to sort of put on blinders not to think that this particular bar was targeted because of the community. and what now is part of the investigation is in that gap between what was maybe personal issues with his mother and a more public attack against the lgbtq community. what was happening in terms of his mental state, in terms of radicalization. that s what i would be focused on at this stage. yeah, phil, what are your thoughts on that? let me be really clear here, jim. i think the conversation appropriately, initially, is about criminal charges, about assuring whether we understand those charges are just state and local or whether those charges are federal. that is the wrong long-term question. this is not a law enforcement
until the day this shooter stepped into that grocery store yesterday and pulled the trigger, he had not, to our knowledge, committed any crime. right, and so that adds a level of difficulty r unlike, say, an international terrorist who might be in communication with a terrorist group. isis or al qaeda. it s a totally different law enforcement question, it is not illegal. in fact, there s the first amendment right to be a racist white guy expousing these beliefs. and yet our approach to domestic terrorism is just fundamentally different from how, for example, we ve approached, you know, what people call islamic terrorism in the rest of the world. i can see that for a long time, if we had been having this conversation 20 years ago, there was no abdication on the law enforcement s, you know, role of monitoring muslim communities, mosques were monitored, many muslim people, personally that i know had the fbi show up on their doorstep. they were american citizens.
