served. with us to start off our coverage, nbc news white house correspondent, monica alba, at the washington national cathedral, melissa murray, a former law clerk to sotomayor, and laura jarrett, and presidential historian, michael beshlash. reporter: josé, we will hear from the late justice s son in addition to her biographer. as you will hear from president biden and chief justice john roberts, it s remarkable because both of them really first met her in 1981. john roberts was working in the reagan administration, in the white house, he was helping to prepare her for her confirmation hearing, and then, of course, senator biden was somebody questioning her as part of the process, and who engaged with her and even told her that she should use the fact that she was going to be this trailblazer, this first woman to serve as a supreme court justice as something she could use to go out and push the equal rights amendment forward, for instance, and that s something sandra day

it has been said that the supreme court is like a family. a family composed entirely of in-laws. 42 years ago, i was assigned to help then judge o connor join that family. it was my first day in a new job at the justice department, and i was proud to be part of her team. i thought i did a pretty good job. after all, the justice was confirmed 99-0. we must have had something to do with that. only many years later was i told she thought i was slow in getting material to her. i should have learn ed that whe she had a challenge or responsibility before her, her approach was simple and direct. get it done. the way she participated in oral argument at the court is a good example. justices have many different styles on the bench. some like the back and forth of debates, others pose unusual hype otheticals, some badger counsel to get concessions. others spell out a particular theory at length and ask for comment. now all this is fine and good, but justice o connor was different. af

at 1 p.m. as opposed to 11 a.m. tomorrow. he not come out after arriving here 4 p.m. he waved at supporters who were waiting for him. take a look at that moment as the motorcade pulled up. he walked in. that is where he will walk out as he s going down for processing and arraignment. he will be fingerprinting and mug shots but no handcuffs. how this shakes out for the former president remains to be seen. he quite literally is fighting for his freedom and political future at once but returns now are positive receiving widespread support from the republican party including from people expected to run against him in the 2024 primary governor ron desantis one of them and his campaign raised $8 million since his indictment on thursday so the arraignment is set for 2:15 tomorrow expected to last about a half hour so the former president sometime around 3:00 is expected to go to the airport and fly back to florida where he is expected to make a speech at mar-a-lago tomorrow night.
