Catching Up with Samara Joy, and Four Finalists in the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition

I first met Samara Joy in November 2019, two days before she won the prestigious Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition at NJPAC. She walked into the WBGO studio for her interview as a finalist with a very mild, unassuming presence that certainly wouldn’t set off any alarm bells.
We started talking and she mentioned how she had only come to discover Sarah Vaughan’s Lover Man the previous year, as a student at SUNY Purchase. She was instantly enthralled, and dove in headfirst into the legend s body of work.

Samara (who previously used her family name, McLendon) grew up in a family rooted in gospel and R&B. (Her grandparents led the Philadelphia-based gospel group The Savettes). City of Atlanta Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs presents 'In the Tradition' Virtual Series

The City of Atlanta – Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs is presenting a free, eighteen-episode virtual jazz series, called In the Tradition, which will feature jazz artists interviewed by local Atlanta jazz and art leaders. Jazz lovers can view the video interviews live on AtlantaFestivals.com, Facebook, YouTube and Channel 26 on select Tuesdays from April through August 31, 2021.
“We’re excited to present this safe and free virtual interview series to jazz lovers both here in Atlanta and afar,” said Camille Russell Love, executive director – Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. “It’s our hope that these interviews will spark a deeper appreciation for one of our country’s original artforms and inspire the public to join us at the Atlanta Jazz Festival, which is anticipated to move to fall 2021 when large outdoor events are safe,” she added. ....
