A CHORUS of Far North victims, politicians and even a one-time offender are leading a renewed call for a complete overhaul of the juvenile justice system in the wake of a double fatality crash.
Community fury is surging over the sentence handed down to a 17-year-old driver who dodged serving any jail time for a horrific crash which killed young and beloved local couple Lauren Quabba, 16, and Evan Fielder, 19 in October 2019.
Ms Quabba s father Rodney spoke out after the Townsville boy s sentencing earlier this month to demand action and said the offender s three-month conditional release order flew in the face of logic. ....

Crash victim's dad demands juvenile justice changes


 
Mr Quabba said the juvenile justice system remained out of touch with the public and the driver, who had been partying at a music festival and still had MDMA in his system, had suffered no consequences.
Life can t be so cheap, he said.
Their futures were taken at his hands on the wheel.
As a juvenile he had adult responsibilities and privileges of driving a car without the consequences.

The driver, who is from Townsville, was 17 at the time of the crash so cannot be identified and was sentenced under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act. ....

Bruce Highway crash: teen that fell asleep while driving, killing young couple, won't go to jail


A festivalgoer who had MDMA system when he fell asleep at the wheel, killing two teenagers, has avoided jail time. 
Lauren Quabba, 16, and her boyfriend Evan Fielder, 19, died after a Toyota HiLux veered onto the wrong side of the Bruce Highway in Cairns in October 2019.
The Queensland couple, who had been dating for a few weeks, were killed instantly.
The night before the crash, the 17-year-old P-plate driver attended a music festival where he took MDMA.

A TEENAGE boy who killed two young sweethearts in a horrific crash north of Townsville is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel before his vehicle slammed head on into the couple.
The Gulliver boy, who cannot be identified legally, was driving from Cairns to Townsville after attending a music festival the day before.
Sleep-deprived after a night of revelry and drug taking the then-17-year-old made the fatal decision to embark on the four-hour journey home.
He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing two deaths but the teenager who will turn 19 in just a number of months won t spend any time behind bars. ....
