Acton charity City Harvest delivers ten million meals

Acton food charity City Harvest has delivered ten million meals in London in the last year to vulnerable groups including refugees, women fleeing domestic violence, children, the elderly and those suffering with mental ill health.
Ahead of World Hunger Day on the 28th May, SWL spoke to Laura Winningham, co-founder of the charity, who recently received an OBE for her work as an Unsung Hero of the Pandemic .
City Harvest, which was set up in 2014, works with companies like supermarkets and restaurants to collect surplus food that would otherwise be thrown away, and connect it with distributers for the people who need it most, supporting 340 charities through deliveries. ....

City Harvest appoints David Carter as CEO

David Carter joins City Harvest from management consultancy firm KPMG
City Harvest has appointed David Carter as the new CEO replacing founder Laura Winningham, who is taking a new position as head of strategy at the charity.
Carter joins the London organisation from his management consultancy position with KPMG. Prior to that he spent 28 years as an officer in the British Army.
Winningham, who founded the charity in 2014, will focus on strategic development while working alongside Carter.
“I am delighted to be joining City Harvest at such a pivotal time for the charity,” said Carter. “What the team achieved under lockdown shows the true grit of City Harvest, something I am already very proud to be part of. I look forward to guiding City Harvest to become the ‘go to’ charity partner for London businesses, making London a more sustainable city where everyone has access to nutritious food. ....

The City of London Corporation has provided funding for thousands of meals to be delivered to families in need – and is urging others to follow suit.
The £25,000 grant from the City Corporation’s International Disasters Fund to the food distribution charity City Harvest will enable the Livery Kitchens initiative to continue until July.
The scheme, which supports people in East London, sees three City Livery Companies partnering to provide food, kitchens and chefs who cook meals which are distributed to charities identified by City Harvest.
It forms part of the wider Livery Kitchens initiative, in which 62 Livery Companies and other donors have given over £640,000, funding over 130,000 meals delivered since April last year. ....

City of London companies provide meals to City Harvest

Thousands of high-quality meals created by top chefs are being sent to families in need across east London by City livery kitchens.
Cooked meals are being paid for by the City of London’s International Disasters Fund, which has dished out £25,000 to the City Harvest food distribution charity.
The scheme is supplying groups like the Solidarity Britannia Food Bank in Bethnal Green and the Aston-Mansfield charity which runs the Little Manor Play Project in Manor Park.
“I used to have a job and pay for everything I needed,” one user at the Bethnal Green food bank, named only as Sultana by City of London Corporation, revealed. ....
