West Coast councils at odds over new rules for Airbnbs

The formal feedback on the issue had come mostly from Airbnb owners – 49 of the 56 submitters were owners of short-term visitor accommodation.
The small number of others who provided feedback were all worried about Airbnbs taking residential dwellings out of the owner-occupier and longer-term rental market.
Since October 2020 the number of Airbnbs on the West Coast has dropped by 30 per cent (240 properties) and current occupancy rates were less than 50 per cent, the planners reported.
“Whether these 240 properties have returned to other housing markets, or just been withdrawn from Airbnb listings is not known but is likely related to the decline in tourism in parts of the West Coast,” they said. ....

Buller Mayor's regional council criticism over flood crisis 'not personal'

Buller members of the West Coast Regional Council say criticism levelled at them by Mayor Jamie Cleine over the Westport flood was unfair and unfounded.

Cleine said the regional councillors had been conspicuous by their absence during the crisis, and left him to front a public meeting where he was asked why the town did not have floodwalls to protect it.
Flood protection was the regional council s job - not the district council s, the mayor said.
The two Buller representatives on the council, John Hill and Laura Coll McLaughlin said they were disappointed with the mayor s comments, which implied they had not been on deck to help out with the flood response. ....

Westport is now moving into a recovery mode after recent flooding in the small coastal town.
Buller members of the West Coast Regional Council say criticism levelled at them by Buller Mayor Jamie Cleine over the Westport flood is unfair and unfounded.
