Nash-King reelected; Harris loses by 2 votes in Killeen election

Debbie Nash-King was the top vote-getter with 572 votes.
In an upset, candidate Michael Boyd beat incumbent Steve Harris by two votes â 181 to 179 â to represent District 4. Harris was looking for his third consecutive term in District 4, and his fourth overall. Harris said he believes there were voting issues at several polling places and will file for a recount.
âIâm very surprised,â Harris said in council chambers following the results. âItâs disappointing, but God is still good. We will see what happens after the recount.â
Harris was the lone dissenting vote at a council meeting Tuesday to ban no-knock warrants by the Killeen Police Department. Harris said he wanted to see the people vote on the issue, and not have the council make the decision for the city. ....

Killeen City Council candidates making final push before Election Day

Killeen voters will head to the polls Saturday to decide four Killeen City Council races. Two incumbents are running to retain their seats, while District 1 and District 3 will see fresh faces representing them in council chambers.
The Herald spoke with the candidates as they made their final appeals to voters to see what issues are top of mind in Killeen.
District 1
The District 1 race to replace term-limited Councilmember Shirley Fleming features five candidates, the most in any district this election cycle. Candidates said the city-wide issue of poor road conditions dominated a lot of their conversations with constituents. But the lack of grocery stores in District 1 was the biggest district-specific issue they heard about. ....

Thirteen candidates are vying for four district council seats on the Killeen City Council in the May 1 election, with early voting starting on Monday.
There are five candidates competing for District 1, currently held by Shirley Fleming, two candidates competing for District 2, three candidates for District 3 and three candidates for District 4.
The District 2 seat is currently held by Debbie Nash-King, who is running for reelection against William Baumgartner. The District 3 seat was held by Jim Kilpatrick, who died in January, and is currently held by interim Councilmember Terry Clark. Killeen council candidates weigh in on assistant city manager hiring

The Killeen City Council tonight will consider approval of naming current Public Works Director Danielle Singh as the cityâs new assistant city manager.Â
Singh s name is being put forward by City Manager Kent Cagle, following a nationwide search in which the city received 59 applications and conducted six interviews with candidates for the job that was advertised with a salary in the $160,000 range.
The vote could take place as early as tonight during the Killeen City Council meeting.
While Killeen Mayor Jose Segarra said the job search for a replacement of former Assistant City Manager David Ellison was transparent and by the book, some of the current councilmembers expressed concern, saying they were not kept in the loop regarding the progress of the search. ....

Filings show candidates ready to go for another election

Thatâs apparently not the case â at least from the viewpoint of local candidates.
As the filing period closed Friday for the upcoming May 1 municipal and school board elections, all eight races in the Killeen area are contested.
Moreover, the three local elections â Killeen City Council, Killeen ISD school board and Harker Heights City Council had drawn a total of 25 candidates for eight seats.
Six of those candidates are seeking a single seat â District 1 on the Killeen City Council. With incumbent Shirley Fleming finishing her third term and ineligible to seek reelection because of charter restrictions, a half-dozen hopefuls are campaigning for the seat. ....
