The latest inspiration of a woman who has painted several murals in west Baltimore honors a poet who captured hearts across the country.Empowerment comes through yellow brush strokes at the hands of 26-year-old Latosha Maddox, every color highlighting Black women and each stroke representing history. It was just amazing to see somebody that I can really see in myself, like a face that (resonates) with me, someone close to my age doing something that amazing, Maddox said. Her latest inspiration was inauguration and Super Bowl poet laureate Amanda Gorman. The artist said the portrait embodies exactly her style. It s all to give a much lighter, maybe even surrealist environment for Black people where it’s often where we re focusing on the hardships and oppression and things like that.
