HKS Equity Coalition, a student group advocating for equity and justice at the Harvard Kennedy School, published an open letter in late January calling for several equity-related changes at the Kennedy School. The letter rearticulates demands the Coalition made in previous years, including the implementation of a semester-long course covering racism and colonialism, as well as biannual anti-racism workshops, a public audit of the Kennedy Schoolâs course curricula, and the annual hiring of four BIPOC faculty. The Kennedy School s Black Student Union, Latinx Caucus, Asian American and Pacific Islander Caucus, Arab Caucus, Womenâs Caucus, and the LGBTQ Caucus joined the HKS Equity Coalition in signing the letter, which garnered 329 signatures as of Wednesday. ....

Last Updated January 21, 2021 A proposal to temporarily designate space in the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union for the Latinx Resource Center, or LRC, was voted down by the ASUC Student Union Board of Directors at its Jan. 15 meeting. The board’s vote comes as two organizations currently residing in the student union’s fourth floor the Queer Alliance and Resource Center and the bridges Multicultural Resource Center are expected to transition into new spaces, according to Martin Siron, vice president of finance for the UC Berkeley Graduate Assembly. ....

Emanuel “Chris” Welch gathered crucial support in his bid to be the next speaker of the Illinois House on Tuesday, picking up backing from the Latinx Caucus and seeing two of his rivals exit the race. In a vote late Tuesday, 50 House Democrats voted for Welch for speaker, and 15 chose downstate state Rep. Jay Hoffman, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times. Another eight voted present. After the state House and Senate worked until shortly before 6:30 a.m. Wednesday debating and voting on a flurry of final bills for the lame-duck session, House Democrats planned to meet again behind closed doors Wednesday morning in an effort to decide on a speaker to succeed Mike Madigan as well as vote on any final bills. ....
