A university is often referred to an alma mater, literally a kind and nurturing mother. Just like our relationships with our mothers, each student also has a unique relationship with their university. Often, this relationship is imbued with joys of discovery, learning, and of course growing up. For many others, it is a time of intense struggle, both financial or personal, bullying, and in terms of universities in South Asia, often marred with dirty politics. And yet, the institution and its legacy is always larger than the sum of its parts.
As an alumnus myself, the greatest take from university is a group of wonderful people I call friends, and some lifelong lessons but not the academic kind, as I scarcely remember anything from the complicated derivations and theories, and the horrors of exams. I am not alone in cherishing the other side of university life. For many, the time has yielded lifelong relationships, and beautiful memories. Here are a few, of the mischief and care ....

Pwani Teknowgalz Launches A First Technology Space For Girls In Mombasa


“We have had this vision for over five years since we started our impactful work of equipping girls and young women with technology skills in Mombasa,” said Ruth Kaveke, Director and Co-Founder Pwani Teknowgalz. “We are thrilled that the space will empower women.”

At the launch, CodeHack students whose physical learning was cut short due to the pandemic were welcome. CodeHack is one of the initiatives by Pwani Teknowgalz that aims at training and equipping young women from marginalized communities with employable coding skills.
Ruth Kaveke, during the official opening of the space, encouraged the girls to utilize their time well in the space. “The equipment in the lab is meant for you to utilize. Make sure you use your time well to learn, and always feel free to ask your mentors questions in the process. We are here to support you in your journey of acquiring technical skills,” she added. “The space is a safe space, and will help you realiz ....
