Good morning everybody and welcome to the Economic Policy institute. Thanks for joining us today. Delighted to kick off the new hour and important and provocative panel on manufacturing employment. And weve invited susan house mann Vice President to present her manufacturing and employment data. And this debate is not new. In fact, Larry Michelle from the Economic Policy former president and now distinguished fellow raised similar concerns back in 1989. But this debate has raged and it has been an important under ping of policy debates that have to do with trade and automation and how we address issues or concerns around the Manufacturing Sector, the health of the Manufacturing Sector, and what policies might be needed. So im going to introduce the entire panel right now lets susan present her research, and we have carolyn friend to comment. And from university had hoped to join us here today but was presented from weather for traveling. So Larry Michelle will read his prepared remark.
Structural integrity of the building. The rest of the building from the fire and the water. A terrible blaze. Just after 10 00 a. M. , the smoke begins to spill the sky. Flames roaring high above the roof of the under construction building. A nightmare for firefighters. And an entire college campus. For fire crews the buildings design is the greatest challenge. Brick is only on the facade, interior and the roof system. All lumber. Fueling the rapid spread of the flames. No sprinkleer system, no alarm system. Dangerous to fight a fire in a building under construction. The safeguards are not in place. For those on the outside its the smoke, enough to force the university of maryland campus to close for the day. Enough to make the lungs burn. I can smell the smoke in my apartment a little bit. I heard reports from friends on campus most of the building. Brad now back live now you can see the firefighters up there on the truck. Putting water on the fire. You can still see that smoke. That
In the House Chamber when hes giving his state of the Union Address and shout out you lie when in fact he was telling the truth. When you try to undo a policy that has helped hundreds of thousands of young men and women come out of the shadows, and go to school and go to work, and you vote in favor of that, then youre no different from the guy who yells out that immigrants are rapists, that they bring crime and drugs to this country. And so you cant try to separate yourself from the stick you come from. And no one should try to distance donald trump from the republicans in congress. They are one and the same. He is just an offspring of what we have seen over the years coming from republicans in congress. And so its time to change, because if youre a bystander, youre allowing things to happen, and for many people, including me, this becomes very personal, because donald trump and republicans in congress are talking about my parents, and about me, and its time for us to stand up and say
Like exxon, chevron, and pretty much nearly every other oil stock out there. Lets find out the reason and get to Jackie Deangelis at the nymex. Thats exactly right. Near 7 increase in oil prices on the day today. Remember, this is after the seesaw week here and, of course, we are near session highs at this point. Some buying the dip here, some technical buying, driving the price higher, but there is fundamental strength to because traders are looking at numbers out there, not just from the u. S. , but also in europe and taking them with a positive tone. Look at u. S. Production over the month of march. Ive got the numbers for you. A million barrel per day decline here in the United States, were just over 9 million as of april 1st. Next week could be that inflexion point where we drop under that level. Remember, this is down from 9. 6 Million Barrels june last year, so significant drop here. Those rig count declines that were going to hear about later in the hour starting to maybe have
