Weinberg explains why he is staying at Oak Ridge (then called Clinton Laboratories) rather than taking a job with General Electric. After World War II ended, the direction of nuclear energy was unclear:
At present there are exceedingly few people, perhaps not more than ten, in the entire country who are sufficiently qualified and sufficiently interested to direct developments of chain-reacting piles. Under the circumstances, I feel that it is my duty to remain here at Clinton Laboratories where a pile development program is already under way and where whatever knowledge I have will be most effectively used. ....
