Impact statement for new prison released by BOP A final supplemental environmental impact statement has been completed for a proposed new federal prison in Leavenworth. And the document is now subject to a 30-day review period, according to Kimberly S. Hudson, site selection specialist for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Officials with the BOP have proposed constructing a Federal Correctional Institution and Federal Prison Camp on the grounds of the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth. The new FCI would replace the existing penitentiary. But BOP officials have said they want to find a new use for the old prison. The FCI will be designed to house about 1,152 medium-security male inmates. The camp will be designed to house about 256 minimum-security male inmates. Allocated funding for the new prison and satellite camp totals $356 million. ....
The Leavenworth Public Library has reopened its doors. After the building closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the library began allowing people inside again Monday. “We’re really very glad to be open,” Director Matt Nojonen said. The library is now open from 9-11 a.m. and 2-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9-11 a.m. and 2-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The library continues to offer curbside service from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday. This allows people to pick up reserved items without going into the building. Nojonen said some people are still interested in using the curbside service, which was offered while the building was closed to the public. ....
Lansing offices reopen The Leavenworth Times After being closed to the public for more than a month, Lansing city offices will reopen their doors next week. “We’re reopening Monday,” said Ken Miller, city public information officer. Public access to Lansing offices has been prohibited since Nov. 23. City buildings were temporarily closed to the public following a spike in COVID-19 cases in Leavenworth County. While the offices have been closed for walk-ins, city employees could still be contacted by email and telephone. Miller said the decision to reopen the offices came after city officials reviewed the latest data from the Leavenworth County Health Department regarding COVID-19 infection rates. ....
