　　另外，过去西藏百姓在自家修行、念经、供佛是自由的，但参加各种宗教仪式就不一定是平等和自由的。有很多禁忌束缚了人们的信仰自由。例如女性不被允许进入寺院。直到和平解放后，才改变了男女之间的信仰不平等。
　　如今经过70年发展，老百姓脱离了生活之苦，佛教也失去了垄断一切的思想基础。人民政府在西藏各地办起了普及科学和文化的小学、中学、大学，从这些学校毕业的新生一代，对佛教信仰的态度发生了变化。上世纪90年代，我在西藏做过一系列家庭调查，其中关于父母对子女的职业期待这项调查发现，希望子女当干部的父母占60%以上。说明干部作为管理、保护一个地区的工作者，在老百姓心中地位很高。其次是希望子女当医生。而希望子女当喇嘛的只有3%。
