St. Landry Parish School Board declines helping Donald Gardner upgrade

If Donald Gardner Stadium is eventually converted into a multi-sport complex, none of the funding for the project will be provided by the St. Landry Parish School District.
School Board members made that decision Thursday night, overwhelmingly defeating a proposal to contribute $1 million from the school system to redesign the stadium into a facility with an eight-lane outdoor track and an artificial turf field for football and soccer.
Superintendent Patrick Jenkins, State Rep. Dustin Miller and Opelousas Mayor Julius Alsandor have pushed for the proposed $2 million stadium conversion project that has already received $1 million in financial backing from the city’s Downtown Development District. ....

Antoinette Chaffers’ Pete, 65, grew up in west Crowley and attended a small, all-Black Catholic school connected to her church and run by the Sisters of the Holy Ghost from San Antonio. St. Theresa Catholic Church still stands on West Third Street, but the school has long been shuttered and the sisters returned to Texas.
The youngest of eight, Pete jokes that the sisters gave her mother, a devout Catholic, a discount on tuition at the school that went up to eighth grade. Her siblings continued into Ross High School, the school afforded to Black students in Crowley during segregation. ....

Lafayette school system returning students to elementary campuses

The Lafayette Parish School System s goal of getting fifth-graders back on elementary school campuses is nearly accomplished after five years of building expansions and policy changes to complete the districtwide realignment.
With new classroom wings and expanded cafeterias, most elementary schools will be able to accommodate another grade level on campus this fall, leaving only one middle school with fifth-graders for the 2021-2022 school year. And that one will be tackled next.
On Wednesday, the Lafayette Parish School Board approved a realignment that would keep fifth-graders at Broadmoor Elementary rather than sending them to one of several middle schools, beginning this fall. ....
