Kentucky long rifle could fetch half a million dollars at Morphy's auction on May 18 | Entertainment


Morphy Auctions, the Denver-based auction house, will host a historic 161-lot selection of early arms and military memorabilia on May 18. The auction includes American flintlock rifles and pistols, Revolutionary War sabers, French and Indian War powder horns and more. Bids can be made live or online via Morphy Live.
The premier lot of the May 18 auction is a historically significant Kentucky long rifle presented by the Marquis de Layfayette to his Tuscarora Iroquois guide and friend Chief Tunis – who accompanied him during the Revolutionary War and, later, led him on two dozen expeditions across 24 states.
Lafayette, a French aristocrat and military officer, played a key role in the victory of the American Revolution. ....

Author of new Thaddeus Stevens book to discuss political career of Lancaster's abolitionist congressman


Writing a biography of Lancaster’s 19th-century antislavery congressman, Thaddeus Stevens, “was sort of a long-term plan” for historian Bruce Levine.
“He’s kind of a nearly lifelong hero of mine,” says Levine, a professor emeritus of history at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and an author of several books on the Civil War era.
“I first learned about his existence, really, when I was in college and took a Black history course,” Levine says by phone. “I grew up in the era of the 1960s civil rights movement (and) have always been dedicated to that cause. And when I read about Thaddeus Stevens, everything I read about him appealed to me.” ....
